High blood pressure is a common symptom of Polycystic Kidney Disease(PKD) and may be its first sign. In return, high blood pressure also can accelerate PKD progression. Therefore, it is very important for the patients with PKD to know the reason of high blood pressure so as to take relative treatments to control the high blood pressure.
Kidneys are important organs in regulating blood pressure by secreting renin. However, for the patients with PKD, with the continuous enlargement of cysts, they will oppress the surrounding renal nephrons thus leading to renal ischemia and anoxia. As a result, the kidneys will secrete more renin than before so the patients’ blood pressure will rise.
Untreated, high blood pressure can accelerate the disease progression and increase the risk of other complications such as blood vessel diseases, proteinuria and so on. Consequently, it can make PKD develop into Renal Failure at faster speed.
