Health experts say it has potential to greatly improve treatment of the respiratory disease. Diabetes drug may keep lung cancer at bay

http://www.reuters.com

The common diabetes drug metformin may hold promise as a way to keep smokers from developing lung cancer, U.S. researchers said on Wednesday.
They said metformin prevented lung tumor growth in mice exposed to a cancer-causing agent found in tobacco smoke, and because it is already widely used in people, it may be worth further study.
Metformin has been shown to switch on an enzyme that blocks mTOR -- a protein that helps tobacco-induced lung tumors grow.

7 Best Stress-Fighting Foods

http://health.yahoo.net

I send out a lot of info on my Twitter feed, from nutrition news to management tips. I get the most passionate reaction—and the most retweets—when I talk about stress. In fact, a friend of mine recently told me that stress was her biggest dietary villain. “I eat when I’m stressed,” she said.
To which I reacted, “Good!” You should eat when you’re stressed—it’s our bodies’ natural reaction to want to store calories to face whatever challenge is causing the stress in the first place. The key, however, is to eat what your body wants—the foods that actually counteract the effects of stress, and make you stronger (and leaner) when the tough times pass. So next time anxiety runs high, be sure to grab one of these seven stress-fighting foods.

FDA Panel Rejects Xyrem as Fibromyalgia Treatment

http://www.webmd.com

An FDA advisory panel today overwhelmingly rejected the application of Jazz Pharmaceuticals for the approval sodium oxybate (Xyrem) for the treatment of fibromyalgia.
The drug is chemically similar to GHB, widely considered a date-rape drug. Approving it for such a large patient population -- 5 million people are estimated to suffer from fibromyalgia -- would risk flooding the streets with a pharmaceutical-grade version of the highly controlled substance.

No Siblings? Your Social Skills Are Just Fine

http://children.webmd.com

Despite concerns that an "only" child may be spoiled by his or her parents, new research suggests that teenagers without siblings don't seem to be disadvantaged in the development of social skills.
Researchers at Ohio State University, who examined interview data on more than 13,000 middle and high school kids, say they found that those without siblings were chosen as friends by their classmates as often as those with brothers and sisters.
